Why companies share information?

Phillip Townsend Associates provides unique and confidential services to our clients. Although we enable clients to measure and compare themselves to their peer group, we do not disclose or share any individual Clients' data with their competitors or anyone else. In all of our benchmarking programs, none of the participating companies are ever able to determine another company's input/data.

Managers in companies around the globe strive to become more efficient producers, distributors, and marketers as they develop and apply new technologies. These companies go through cycles of growth and tight supply and then into economic downturns with an over abundance of capacity. Competitive forces require that senior management remain focused on continuous improvement in all areas of their business.

General benchmarking data is available in some fashion or another within most industries. The vast majority of publicly published data is extrapolated or derived from estimates of industry analysts, newsletters, market researchers and trade groups. The data may be of interest to companies in the industry, yet it is not validated and not at the level that could impact any significant change in management strategies, actual expenditures or other decisions. However, when the participants in one of our industry-wide benchmarking projects can tell us what they would really like to know about how they compare with their peer industry peers, the results can yield unprecedented management knowledge to enable the right decisions at the right time.

As a result of sharing data and participating in one of our industry-wide projects, we have seen senior managers change their strategic direction, make major adjustments to where they are spending capital, and frequently understand aspects of their place in their industry that they had never been able to see before.
